[00:00:30] Don't worry about it. It's French. Hello and welcome back to the show of shits. Thanks. Shit, I told my Hairdresser. How are you doing, Jack? I'm alright. How's it going?
[00:00:56] Doing really good. I think I want to get some shit off of my chest. I think a lot of hairdressers like to go through and get a lot of shit off their chest. Somebody shit on your chest and you want it off. Yeah. I don't think I want to hear about that. I just want to see the photos of it. But I'm sure you do. That's another conversation. What do you got then? Tell me what's bothering you, Jason.
[00:01:23] You ever have those people who went to like, okay, this happened. This is my sister. I have a half sister from my dad's first marriage. And when he was in the hospital, unfortunately, he was passing away at this point with lung cancer. We flew her out. We paid for her to come out to visit our father before he passed away.
[00:01:47] And when she got there, she said the only reason we flew her out was because she used to be a nurse. And we wanted her skills for being a nurse to be there to help out with our father. And I was like, bitch, you went to nursing school for a month. You didn't even get the uniform. You know what I mean? It was like, no.
[00:02:12] But you know how people are like, they're an expert on something just because they actually, they took the textbook home. But that's as far as they got. Yeah. I see what you're kidding at here. But just backing up a minute. So I never thought that you flew her out there because her dad was dying. You thought it would be nice. Correct. For him to see her and see each other. You know, one last time she felt used. Yes. Been taken advantage of.
[00:02:42] Because you were taking advantage of her skills. Yes. That she obtained, you know, like years ago for like a month. Exactly. Jeez. I wonder how many people she's told, hey, I used to be a nurse. Oh, she told every nurse that walked in. And they're like, uh-huh. Okay. Right. And it's like, so. What did they have to say about that? Yeah. They're like, I'm here for him. I'm here to take care of him. You know, thanks for the conversation.
[00:03:11] I was like, oh, you don't need to go and have your lunch or break or whatever. I got it. I got this. They're making me do this. Yeah. Yeah. But as a hairdresser, this happens to me where I'll get someone that comes into the salon and they're telling me like they went to beauty school. So they know hair. And I'm like, okay. And they always have to insert this in right from the beginning of the consultation.
[00:03:38] And so I'm like trying to see like how far it had gotten. And yeah. I'm like, hey, you did a little hair. Yay. That's fantastic. That's awesome. Did you get nervous when they say that? Oh, yeah. Oh, geez. Just shaking. Trembling in my, yeah. Why'd you say that? Now I'm sweating. You know, it's like, I hope I do a good job. The sweat's going down to my butt crack now. You know what I mean? Sure. No. But I'm like, okay, great. So you went to beauty school. That's awesome. I'm like, oh, I know a bit about hair. All right. So what do you want to do for the haircut?
[00:04:08] You know, and I'm like, I don't give a shit. But then they also, then they tried to go through and insert themselves in the middle of the haircut. So are you going to be point cutting this? Yeah. Remember when we said we're going to go through and actually cut your hair with texture? That's exactly what that meant. You know, I'm like. But then they just, they start critiquing you about the blow dry and I use this. And then they always, it's always like some product line, some obscure product line that hadn't been made in like 10 years.
[00:04:38] You know, like I still use this. And I'm like, where'd you find this shit in the trash bin behind the fucking big lots? Like, okay. It's kind of annoying. You know, it's like how that you sailed it. I was trying to think about, you know, it's like, yes, I've had other hairdressers, you know, mentioned their hairdressers. And some of them are just, they do like photo shoots or movies. They could actually do it themselves. Maybe they don't want to do it. Yeah. And they just let me know, you know, like, I'm like, oh, okay, cool.
[00:05:08] What do you do? You know, like we talk about that. They're not watching what I'm doing. You know, it's like, hey, man, give me like a rundown of what I normally have. And then they're like, so that being said, do what you want. Right. But this is someone who's like, there's a reason there's that song called beauty school dropout in Greece. You know what I mean? Because it's a fucking thing and it happens all the time. But these people come in thinking like they're a fucking expert.
[00:05:35] Like my sister, it might as well be the doctor and the nurse and take care of everything. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, because she went to nursing school and got the fucking handbook. You know what I mean? Same thing with these people. Someone handed them a comb a long time ago and a pair of scissors and a tint brush. And all of a sudden they're the fucking expert on everything that's happening inside the salon. They'll start watching someone do something else. I kind of like, oh, I don't know if I'd approach it that way. So it's like, well, you can't because you're not even fucking licensed. You idiot. You can't. You literally cannot.
[00:06:04] We can't even hire you to even do a shampoo in here. You're not even qualified to do a shampoo. You can't even do a shampoo inside of a licensed hair salon because you don't have a license because you never finished. But they should have a license, I think. Did you ask them? So you work in an office, but you identify as a hairdresser still after all these years? Okay. Interesting. Yeah, I know.
[00:06:33] I've actually had clients who have said, I'm not a hairdresser, but the guy over there doing that haircut, I'm pretty sure that's not how you do it. So I've worked. Now I've had that before. Someone who let me know they are not a hairdresser, but they do know better. Exactly. So I love that. But yeah, these people, they just take it way too far. You know what I mean?
[00:07:03] And they're just like, and at that point, like I've had enough on my just, and they know, you know, if I stop talking to you, appointments over, we're just done. We're, we're through. But you, I do have a lot of clients that are hairdressers and normally they're really fucking cool people. They want to come in somewhere else because they go, they work at a hair salon. They don't trust anybody there to do their hair. They probably had it fucked up once or twice there. No, I've had that a lot actually.
[00:07:32] So they'll come in and normally they just want to sit down, get their haircut, shut the fuck up for a good hour, or maybe we'll tell a couple of stories here and there, but man, they're just kind of like, thank you for the haircut. Tip you generously, walk out the door. Cause that's what I do with my barber. Hair with me. I mean, I just, I, I tip them generously. I thank you for the haircut. I just want to shut the fuck up at the barbershop. Unless Dexter's got a good story and he normally does. And we'll talk some shit, you know, which we're going to talk about him later.
[00:08:03] I know, but that's usually what it is. You know what I mean? It's just kind of like, do my hair, shut the fuck up. Let's just get this done. I trust you. Let's go. Then I'll get the hairdressers that come in for the class. I used to teach a lot of classes back in the day and I've actually had hairdressers come inside the salon and want to go through and get a lesson as I'm cutting their hair.
[00:08:29] And I'm like, uh, no, they don't want me to go through explaining the whole haircut. So what they want me to do is explain, like break down the haircut. Like I'm actually giving a class as you're cutting it as I'm cutting their hair. I'm like, you can't even see the sections that I'm taking inside your hair. And not only that, you're here for a haircut. You're not here for an actual class. That would take me like at least like two to three hours to do. And that's another pay rate. I think anyway, isn't it? Absolutely.
[00:08:58] That's a whole different charge that they would have to pay. Absolutely. So you could, uh, surprise them at the desk when they go up there paying a haircut. Just tell them, okay, this is like for your day rate for the class. But I had one girl take it to the next level. So I had a girl, I had a woman actually go through and book a haircut inside the salon and it was for her friend.
[00:09:26] So they come in and she's like, oh, I'm going to be going through and paying for my friend's haircut. And you want to know what? That's super normal for me. I've had people do that all the time. Like, Hey, I wanted to go through and treat one of my friends because I like your haircuts. I got them a gift card or I'm going to go through and take care of it because it's their birthday. And when I say, you know, and I wanted to bring to you to have them give me a whole style change. Fine. No problem. Love it. Uh, thanks for the new client. You know? No, that's the opposite of what happened.
[00:09:55] So I had this woman come in, pay for the haircut ahead of time, which was kind of odd, but whatever, you know? And then she brings her, we come over to my station and she was like, yeah, I want you to go through and cut my friend's hair so I could watch. And I stopped and I looked at her and I go, wait a minute. Hang on a second. Who are you? And what do you do? And she looked at me and she was like, I'm like, are you a hairdresser? And she goes, yeah.
[00:10:24] Well, so you want me to want you? So you want me to give you a class so you can watch me do hair inside the salon. And she goes, is that okay? I said, no, it's not. Like, I'm going to cut your friend's hair. You already paid for it. But I'm not going to go through and walk you through step by step on what I'm doing on your friend. That's not how this works. I'm like, I teach classes. She can watch. And here's the crisis. She can watch, but I'm not going to go through and give her a class.
[00:10:54] No, she wanted like a class. Well, no. This was like an impromptu haircutting class. Anyone can watch you do a haircut. You know, it's like whether you do hair or not, you know. Don't they have a term for that? Like, isn't that cuckolding? Yeah. Cuckold. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe that's only with porn. I think that's just the porn though. That's not with like haircuts. Okay. Yeah. So he was mad. I'm assuming she was like, yeah, she got upset.
[00:11:24] And then she was like, well, I'm like, you can watch, but I'm not going to go through step by step. I'm like, you want me to draw you a, you know, a diagram of what I'm doing and give you like terminology and everything. I'm like, I'm not doing that. This is not what this is for. I'm like, I give classes. They're much more expensive than just a haircut. But, you know, but I'm like, if you want to go through and pay my day rate and you want to cut, here's the, like the distributors goes through and they take care of all this stuff. She didn't even ask you ahead of time.
[00:11:52] I think if she had asked ahead of time, maybe you would have been more open to something like that or you would have let her known already. No, I don't really do that. I don't mind if you watch. She made it awkward. She ambushed you. Basically. It definitely was an ambush. That's what happened. And, um, and here's the thing though, I've given private classes before and people have
[00:12:17] paid extra for it, but this was not that, I mean, we make, you know, arrangements ahead of time. I have everything prepared for you. I have the whole terminology, everything broken down for you. I even have like doll heads for your work off of done, done. This was like, Hey, I want to learn something from you at a fraction of the price. I'm like, I'm not giving you my knowledge for like a couple hundred bucks. That's not going to fucking happen. So her friend got a haircut.
[00:12:46] She got to sit over like 10 feet away and watch, you know, and that was it. I'm like, I'm not explaining this to you. Sorry. You know, my, and that point is, well, the two, I was not even willing to give her my cell phone number to actually be a person to call me later on to book for a private lesson. I said, you want to win the distributor does the classes, call them. They'll have you deal with that because of how he did it. That's what I wouldn't like.
[00:13:13] Do you remember, um, how my haircuts would go doing my haircut? How you cutting my hair? Yeah. I remember cutting your hair. Yeah. You weren't like super annoying. Totally. That's what I thought. Yeah. Maybe I didn't like tell you how to do it, but like, if I saw you doing it wrong, I would definitely like, okay, that's what you want to do. All right. Yeah. And I would ignore you. I didn't care.
[00:13:41] I didn't care because I knew you weren't, you're not paying me. You weren't even paying me. Well, you know what I mean? So why should I give a shit? And we're back. So one of the things that I don't know if you've had this happen to you inside the salon
[00:14:04] or not, but I've had clients when I'm done with their hair and we're finished up cam in the mirror. Everyone, everything is cool. They love their hair. Feels great. Looks nice and shiny. And then they start asking you what products did you use? And you're normally right there at your station and you show them and they whip the old phone out and started taking pictures of all your product. And I'm like, oh, cool. Thanks.
[00:14:34] It might, do you want me to show it to you at the front desk? And I'm like, no, no, I got it. I know what you use. I'll go through. I think I can, you know, find it online. I'm like, we do sell it here too. You know? And they're like, oh yeah, I'll find it online. I know it's marked way up. And so, um, thing is though, something I've learned is the ones on Amazon that are cheaper are like either diluted or it's something else. And it's, you know, how do you prove that you'd have to sue them and all this and how
[00:15:04] they get ripped off. Don't they? That's the thing. You know what I mean? Cause there's a lot of knockoffs on Amazon. So I had a client who that's, that was her job. She was like the black ops of like products on Amazon. So whenever she would find out, I like that was like, uh, whenever she'd find out something was a knockoff. Yeah. Boom. You were off the site. You were done. And she goes, Jason, she's like, I'm behind. She goes, there are so many knockoffs on Amazon. It's absolutely insane.
[00:15:34] You know? And she's like, yeah, they have to go through and get something in or they'll read a review, you know, and they start finding out that these people are from a completely different area. You know, they're somewhere in China that shouldn't even be making this certain product. That's where it's coming from. Yeah. And so she's like, nope, we're shutting this down because they can get like in trouble if they're going through and selling something on their platform and they're saying, Hey, this is on Amazon prime.
[00:16:00] And then you get it and there's allergic reaction because you're using like a face cream that had gasoline in it. Then Amazon might have a problem too, because they're saying like, Hey, we trust this company, you know? So what happened is they get kicked off of there for a while and they end up just like rebranding another name and nothing will happen. You know, it's like, there's no rules anymore. Everyone just does whatever they want and get away with it. That's the problem, you know?
[00:16:28] But that's with everything, not just hair products, but the whole world now, I think, or at least around here, um, photos of it. Why not go look around, you know, but you don't make money off of that. I get if no, exactly somewhere else, you know, and they're buying it somewhere. And not only that, but what they don't know is that, especially on Amazon, let's just say you get a distributor who actually goes through and sells this product. And a lot of the times these distributors, they might have a license to go through and sell.
[00:16:57] And Amazon does recognize that. What you don't know is that this person is going through and selling the stock that they've had in a warehouse for the past four to five years. And it's not that it's diluted. It's just expired. And then you're buying it on Amazon. And then since it's one of those products that you use on yourself, you can't return it. Always look at the little return thing on there. If you can't return it, don't buy it. But not only that, if you're buying something that it goes onto your body or you put into
[00:17:26] your mouth, don't buy it online. Especially on Amazon where you don't know where you're getting it from. You've got to go through and buy it from a reliable source. And I always tell clients, if you don't like it, return it. You're not going to hurt my feelings. Either we'll find something else that you like or we'll just give you your money back because you don't like it. But we can do that because we're an authorized retailer. Amazon sometimes is, but sometimes you don't know what the fuck you're getting. Maybe it's like returning underwear. You can't return underwear.
[00:17:55] You can't? After you get done trying it on. No, you're not supposed to. You can't. Have you tried doing that, Jack? No. No iPod used underwear online. Is that the same thing? Yeah. No. Anyway. Or maybe it was. Clients of mine have taken photos of products I use and it's for the reason, well, two different reasons. Maybe three different reasons, actually. One of them is they want to know what, well, we don't have anymore.
[00:18:25] So they want to look online or just somewhere around. They want to see how it's available. There's another reason. So they just simply don't forget. It's something I use on them all the time and they want to make sure they just always know. Or there was once like neither one of us could read the name on it because we're old and we didn't have our readers with us.
[00:18:50] So some of these products are like tiny little letters and it's like, how do you, they really ought to make it larger. You know, like if you're in the shower and like you've got to get your glasses to read if a bottle is shampoo or conditioner. That's it. Or nair. Or nair. Yeah. So she took a photo of it so we could zoom in and read ingredients on it. That's what it was. It was like, we wanted to look it up.
[00:19:19] So that's how we did it. Yeah. And then someone took the flashlight on the other phone to put the flashlight on the phone and you can read it from there too. Someone was holding it over our heads. Yeah. Yeah. And. Oh, yeah. So yeah. Yeah. If a main reason is when we don't have something I want to sell them, which is often because I'll sell out of it. And for whatever reason they don't want to buy anymore, or it's on a list that they don't order, but once a week or once a month, or I don't know how they do it, but they find
[00:19:49] it online, like somewhere like Walmart. But the main reason they do that though, is because it's cheaper. Right. Try to find it cheap. But they don't know. They think like, Oh God, I'm getting a good deal. I'm like, no, you're actually getting shit half the time. Because a lot of it could be a knockoff. It's either a not or not a real product because even like places like Target, even these big stores, they'll carry products and they're not real. They're a knockoff from Canada or from China.
[00:20:16] All they know is they're getting a brand name into the door and they can go through and make a, they think they're going to make a lot of money off of it. Some pencil pusher did a Google on it at the head office and said, Oh yeah, this is a popular brand. But then they get it and they don't realize it got shit and they use it and they go, this stuff sucks. It's not even close to what you've actually used inside the salon. So what I'm thinking is that we need to go through and create our own like affiliate or like a QR code and just give that to people. You know what I mean?
[00:20:43] So at least they can go through and actually get a link and hopefully buy it from the manufacturer and have it sent to them because that's what they want. They want things sent to them. Now they want to order things, have a sense of their house and you're just the convenience because people are coming in for haircuts every like three months. Now it's like every six weeks, like it used to be, it's every three months now, you know, so that's what happens. Yeah. And I do like the idea of a QR code that's direct to whoever's, you know, sending it to you.
[00:21:13] Also, you would make money off of that if there's enough people doing it, right? Exactly. You would have to have an arrangement, financial arrangement, you know, or agreement. Well, most companies do that now. You know what I mean? They just go through and like you contact them, you have an affiliate program. They send you a QR code and just show them that so that way they can buy it direct. That way if there's not on the shelf. Alliance would like that. Yeah. I would even like that, you know. I want to try a smaller size before I commit to like, some of the shampoos we have are like
[00:21:41] over 60, 70 bucks for just one bottle, you know, or they're trying to get like a texture spray or something like that. Things like 80 bucks, 90 bucks for the big can or something. Right. You know, like I want to try a small one to make sure it works on me. I would rather. Whatever. I would rather them have better access if we don't actually have it. You know, it's like, you've got to go through the hoop. They got to update this system. You know, it's like, I don't like they're using the old system. Like we don't have it. Well, it'll be about six weeks.
[00:22:10] Well, they would have already found it or they bought it somewhere else by that. You know, like it doesn't work a way. No, it's true. The way it did. If it's going to take that long. I mean, I've got a jacket at Nordstrom's. I went to Nordstrom's. I found a jacket. I really liked it. Didn't have my size. The girl finds it online, orders it for me. I was going to have it sent to my house. I kept getting emails as pushback, pushback. And all of a sudden it was like, oh, the jacket sold out. So we can't send it to you. Well, fuck. I'm going to go somewhere else. You know what I mean?
[00:22:40] I'm not going to go through and deal with that kind of stuff. I hate that shit. I want the product that I want either now or please have it to me within the next couple of days. I don't mind paying shipping and handling. Right. Just make sure that I actually get what I want. So. Right. We need to make it convenient for them to go through and get the product that they want. So here's what happened to me like two weeks ago. So I got three different clients who wanted whatever the shampoo I'm using right now. And they like it.
[00:23:09] I like it. I sell the same one to lots of people. So it's sold out. I've sold all of it. And it's so like one client was like, I'm already out. You don't have any more. So I need to get more. Maybe I want to get the largest one. You know, the one you have at the back car there. Let me ask about that. I'll figure it out. So three days later, we get all of it in finally. So I had three clients who wanted that when they were in last week.
[00:23:37] So when I texted them, I was like, hey, we have that shampoo now. Do you want me to hold one? Each one of them said, no, never mind. I changed my mind. So that's what happened. Because if we had had it right then, they would have bought it. We didn't have it. They thought about it for two days, three days. They don't want it anymore. Because they bought it somewhere else. No. They were just kind of wait and just use up what they have.
[00:24:05] And that's a missed opportunity for not having things available. Say that you have a little much, okay? Say that you ordered too much and it's not selling. It will sell. So every year, you know, have a little sale or something. Anything. Have it available. Make it easy for a client. Say it's a QR code. It gets mailed to their house. But that way, you make sure that the salon's getting a cut. You're getting a cut. You know what I mean? Of every sale that's happening. Right.
[00:24:33] But not only that though, it's like when you are retailing to your client, that means that you have their trust. Otherwise, they're not buying anything from you. And when you don't have things available for them to purchase or you don't have that feel good for them when they're walking out the door, you know what I mean? It's lessened at that point. You know, so have it available for them. Do the QR code. That way, even if you have to go through and undercut the owner, you know what I mean? You go directly to the manufacturer and that way they send it to you and then they send you a cut from where you're selling from that point.
[00:25:03] At least you know your client's buying it. Not only that though, a lot of these companies are having sales and they will actually undercut the salons. Yeah. And that has happened to where they're having a sale on their website and they're getting it for like 30 to 40% less than what they could buy inside the salon. So if at least you can get a part of that, that would be great. But I've actually had it to where a company has actually undercut its own store. Now I'm not going to say the name of the company because it's a really big company and they
[00:25:30] actually have actual company stores where you actually walk in and buy the retail there. But I found that one time I had a client show me a shampoo that I was selling her on Groupon that the leader size was the same as the eight ounce size product. Yeah. And I actually took that ad on Groupon, walked it straight into the store and I showed the manager because the manager gets a percentage of what's sold inside the store.
[00:25:59] And she looked at me and she was like, well, you wouldn't buy it from Groupon. Would you buy it from the store? Because of like loyalty. And I went, whoa, my loyalty flies within my wallet, not with you. My loyalty is in my wallet. Bitch is illusional talking about loyalty. Listen, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to do it mafia style. I'm going to steal it off a truck and sell it out of the back of my car. Sounds much easier. I get to keep everything. You know what I want though?
[00:26:28] That's what the actual company is doing to their own stores. You know what I mean? That's exactly what it is in a weird way. I'm just over the internet. Good for them. Willkommen zurück bei der Berliner Sportschau. Unser Thema heute, der Handballer Kretsche, is wieder aktiv. Richtig gehört. Ich bin wieder aktiv und zwar für Spreequellaktiv. Ach so. Ja. Hab ich immer dabei als Sportvorstand der Füchse Berlin. Da ist immer was los. Probier doch mal. Ah.
[00:26:57] Erfrischend fruchtig und ohne Zucker. Spreequellaktiv. Da werde ich direkt Fan. Alright, well it's time for a little thing we like to call Shitology. Jack? Jack? If you have a beauty school dropout sitting in your chair questioning and commenting on every section you take,
[00:27:27] stop the haircut. Ask them what to do next. You're the one with 200 hours of beauty school under your belt. You tell me you know it all. And when they say, Oh no. Then you tell them to get the fuck out of here. And have a nice day. And if your salon doesn't have any products on the shelves for you to sell, I got a plan B for you. Go to the nearest supermercado. Go all the way to the back to the bottom shelf and find the shampoo that's all in Spanish.
[00:27:57] You know, the one with all the dust on it. Take that shit and dump it into your own bottles. Maybe call it Jampou Fabuloso by Jason. Sounds French, don't it? And for a limited time, if you email us here at info at shoulditoldmyhairdresser.com, you'll get 20% off. And for you, Jack, for your first order, 25% off. I'll have a case. Do you have those in travel size too? For you, anything. I'll go to the dollar store.
[00:28:26] And with that, stay shitty. Stay shitty. Hey, listener persons. Thanks for listening. And if you like our show, please help us grow the podcast by giving us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Amazon Prime, or wherever you get your favorite shit.
